1. Investment Valuation of a Graduate Diploma for Teachers Implications to Career Advancement in the Academe and Education Management
Juan Apolinario Reyes
Assistant Professor, Mathematics and Science Department Lyceum of the Philippines University Batangas, Batangas City Philippines
juanapolinario@gmail.com
This is a case study on the Return on Investment (ROI) of a graduate diploma for the faculty members of the College of Education, Arts and Sciences of Lyceum of the Philippines University Batangas. The ROI model for investment valuation was based on the study done by Reyes (Reyes, 2013). This model constructed the revenue function based on per hour rate increase, semestral loading, and other incentives that come with a graduate degree. The study showed that for a Masters degree, ROI after 10 years of employment is 0.66. For a Phd it is 4.42. The present study looked into the opportunity cost of an investment in a graduate degree by obtaining the ROI of alternative investments that can be had for the same capital devoted to finish the degree. These alternative investments are BPI time deposit, Meralco stocks, investment in gold, and investment in a 3 × 1 square meter cemetery plot. The performance of these alternative investments for the last 10 years was analyzed. The revenue functions were constructed using a simple linear regression model. The revenue function and the initial investment which was set equal to the total matriculation fees to finish a graduate diploma yielded the ROI for each of the alternative investments. The results are: BPI time deposit 1.31, gold 1.08, Meralco Stocks 1.16, and cemetery plot 0.33. This makes a Masters degree a less attractive investment in comparison with time deposit, Meralco stocks, and gold. But to earn a Phd is worth its time and money. A faculty can recover his investment in 2.5 years, and he stands to earn an ROI of 4.42 in a 10-year period.

2. Remittances of the Overseas Marine Service Workers to the Philippines: Implications to Good Governance
VIVIAN B. FLORES, Frede Moreno
Zamboanga State College of Marine Sciences and Technology Zamboanga City
Alliance for International Education, Germany
Using the Network Governance theory (Sorensen, E. & Torfing, J. 2005), this study describes the remittances of the Overseas Marine Service Workers (OMSWs) and assesses its implication to good governance. Since OMSW remittances are mandatory, the Philippine government recognizes only the formal channels of money transfer system to the Philippines. However, some OMSWs are sending cash to their families in the Philippines through the informal channels for the reasons of emergency, speed, friendships and cost. OMSW cash remittances to their respective families are primarily spent on education, food, and health as part of the regular monthly household and family expenditure items. Recipient family members prioritize the purchase of real estate properties, income-generating investments such as micro-enterprises and agricultural lands, clothes, motorcycle or cars. Part of the cash remittances received is also spent during Christmas celebrations;however, low priority is given to spending money on birthdays, fiestas and other occasions of lesser cultural significance to the family. A minimal number of the respondents donate a portion of the money to the barangay and school. On the other hand, a portion of the cash remittances received are not actually spent, but kept as savings for the family. The study further reveals that good governance (e.g. accountability, transparency, participation and rule of law) does not actually have any direct effect on the OMSWs’ and their families overseas remittance- related transaction and experiences, either with the formal channels or informal mechanisms. The study suggests that while pertinent government policies are well in-place, the regulatory governance of the Central bank of the Philippines covering the banking system and service providers within the overseas cash remittance system are actually not understood by OFWs and their families, and largely unknown to ordinary citizens.

The study was undertaken to assess the productive capacity of the proposed Organic Agriculture-Based Social Enterprise (OABSE) program areas and generate livelihood management options. It aimed to 1.) Describe the productive capital of each OABSE area as a socio-ecological system, 2.) Assess the livelihood assets and capacities in terms of productive resource base, use and livelihood patterns, including vulnerabilities, 3.) Provide management and planning guidelines in the transition of farms, 4.) Identify innovation points, research and extension needs for sustainable livelihood.
The approach used was Participatory Rapid Appraisal. Barangays Ponso, Sagrada Familia, Villa Petrona, Nogpo and Libtong of Libon cluster were the respondents.
Libon is generally a rice farming community. The social access seemed advantageous but also manifests low job opportunities and poor economic activities. Majority of the constituents were poor, cannot access financial capital support resulting to low human and physical capital. The individual physical capital was inaccessible due to underutilized natural capital.
For sustainability, Ponso demonstrated the highest sustainability rating due to a relatively higher level of productivity and social enterprise support from its local community. The other four barangays were found to demonstrate a fair sustainability rating. Except Libtong, which is an economically depressed community with lowest sustainability rating, the other barangays were well supported with common livelihood facilities, transportation and communication services.
Generally, the study revealed that amidst climate change, Productivity and Profitability were the primary issues; and development options must be established which will reinforce the cluster’s weak assets, specifically, the financial and human capitals.

In this complex society of today where experiences are innumerable and varied it is not at all possible to present every situation in its original colors hence the opportunities for learning by actual experiences always are not at all possible. It is only through the use of proper audio visual aids that the life situation can be trough in the class room by an enlightened teacher in their simplest form and representing the original to the highest point of similarity which is totally absent in the verbal or lecture method. In the presence of audio aids the attention is attracted interest roused and suitable atmosphere for proper understanding is automatically created, but in the existing traditional method greater efforts are to be made in order to achieve the aforesaid essential requisite. Inspire of the best and sincere efforts on the side of the teacher the net effect as regards understanding or learning in general is quite negligible.

This study determined the motivational effects of LPU Awards of Excellence among members of student organizations. Specifically, this study identifies the performance of student organizations in terms of points accumulated by the organization during the academic year. Moreover, this study also determines the factors affecting the motivation of student organizations in terms of personal, intra-organizational, departmental, and institutional domains. It also assessed if there is a significant difference between the performance of the student organizations and the factors affecting their motivation. The researchers utilized the descriptive method of research.
Results of the study revealed that the overall performance of student organizations in LPU – Batangas is greatly affected by the inability to comply with documentary requirements. The findings also showed that the desire for personal growth, stable organizational structure, and opportunities to represent the department and the university outweighs awards when it comes to motivating students to engage actively in student organization activities. Student organization performance varies significantly depending on the presence of motivating factors under the departmental domain. Moreover, the motivational effects of the LPU Awards of Excellence can be enhanced by making certain improvements in the said awards convocation. A proposed plan of action was prepared to further improve the LPU Awards of Excellence.
The devised plan included the conduction of a more thorough discussion of the documentary requirements of recognized student organizations during their initial orientation. The student organizations shall also be constantly reminded about the submission of their documents. The LPU Awards of Excellence shall be continued and enhanced as it also depicts the personal growth of student leaders and exemplifies the stability of the student organizations. In addition, for college-based student organization awardees, due recognition should also be given to the departments in which they belong so as to motivate the student organizations to improve their performances as well.

ninz.adriano@gmail.com
There is a large body of literature that studies the link between good governance and development in a country level. However, only a few have exploited the same study in the local government unit (LGU) setting. This study attempts to establish the relationship between the quality of governance and the state of local development of the Top 9 Performing LGUs in the Philippines (La Union, Albay, Cavite, Ilocos Norte, Makati City Valenzuela City, Taguig City, Davao City and Angeles City) as measured by the Local Governance Performance Management System (LGPMS), the nationwide governance performance evaluation and management tool used in the Philippines. The author used longitudinal data generated by the LGPMS, particularly the state of local governance and the state of local development, to see if there is a relationship between the two variables using Spearman’s correlation coefficient. Results revealed that that there is no relationship between the quality of governance and the state of local development in the consistently top performing LGUs in the Philippines for the period 2009-2011. The findings of this study will be useful to government officials such as public administrators, LGU executives, policy makers, researchers and students of public administration in addressing the issue of good governance and local development in their respective LGUs.

In this study the researchers developed a human computer interface system where the dynamic gestures on the American Sign Language can be recognized. This is another way of communicating by people who understands and do not understand American Sign Language. They proposed the application of template matching algorithm for the recognition of dynamic gestures where it is based on the number of templates per gesture, which must be taken by the user, to be trained and saved in the system. To be able to recognize the dynamic gestures three things must be considered. These are the number of templates required for the algorithm to be able to recognize the gestures, the factors in handling different hand orientation of other users, and the reliability of the system in terms of communication

The level of a person’s awareness of himself can significantly improve his performance and well-being. The self-concept of employees is considered to be one of the keys to attain organizational success. Thus, the researcher of this study aimed to determine whether the self-concept of educators in De La Salle Lipa affected their job performance, with an ultimate purpose of recommending improvements in the human resource management of the institution. Eighty-four male and female full-time teachers of the institution who belonged to any of the five colleges of the institution with baccalaureate and certificate programs took part in its completion. This descriptive study utilized the theories of Dr. Myrna Pasao’s Filipino Self-Concept and Carl Rogers’ Theory of Personality. Data sheet, Pasao’s self-concept scale, De La Salle Lipa’s performance evaluation and professionalism checklists for faculty were used to gather data. Frequency, percentage, mean and Pearson-product Moment Correlation were the statistical tools utilized.
Findings showed that majority of the respondents belonged to early adulthood, were females, faculty members of the College of Education, Arts and Sciences and served the institution for five years and below. The age and the college where the respondents belonged were generally associated with self-concept. No significant relationship existed between self-concept and job performance, although significant associations between self worth, as a factor of self-concept, and job performance were identified. The findings suggested that the profiles of the respondents significantly related to self-concept. As self-worth was determined to significantly relate to job performance, a need for a more aggressive strategy for identifying the employees’ present self-concept and self-esteem and consequently improving them was raised.

De La Salle Lipa, Lipa City, Batangas Philippines
jose.macatangay@dlsl.edu.ph
The first year of teaching is the deciding factor whether a new teacher will embrace this noble profession or quit at the end of the school year. No matter how equipped a beginning teacher is, challenges arise especially in the first few months of being in the battleground called classroom. It is therefore important that the lived experiences of new teachers be studied in order to improve the experiential learning courses of undergraduate students. Using a hermeneutic phenomenological design, this study aims to explore on the meaning of lived experiences of De La Salle Lipa graduates batch 2014 employed in various schools within and outside the province of Batangas. Specifically, the study aims to identify knowledge, skills and attitudes related to teaching considered important by the participants; interpret the challenges encountered by the participants in their first month of teaching; examine the strategies they employ in solving classroom related concerns; differentiate the experiences of being a student teacher and a real classroom teacher and offer some suggestions to the department on what it can do to help future teachers succeed in their first year of teaching. Following Lichtman’s (2006) six-step process of Codes, Categories and Concepts, key themes related to teaching are expected to emerge from the study. Results will be important in enhancing current practices in teaching pedagogy courses and in designing interventions necessary for curriculum improvement.

minariza_gillaco@yahoo.com
The main purpose of this study was to determine the reading profile of all Jose Rizal Memorial School Grade IV pupils enrolled during the S.Y. 2013-2014 through their word recognition and reading comprehension which was the basis in designing a reading program.
The data on word recognition was observed through pronunciation and oral reading speed using the Dolch’s Basic sight words while the reading comprehension was through answering questions right after their silent reading but slow in reading speed
Based on the standard set by the Philippine Informal Reading Inventory (PHIL-IRI), the respondents were with mastery in reading the basic sight words; only few miscues were identified
In terms of reading comprehension, majority of the respondents were considered under the instructional level which means that they would still benefit from further reading instructions since they are not pupils who refuse or withdraw themselves to read. They can read with assistance and with proper guidance and soon are expected to be independent readers.
Based on the gathered data, the reading profile of the respondents were determined which served as the basis for the proposed reading program.
The reading program is comprised of four sections : (1)Theme/ Content which is composed of the unit number, theme, description, values, content and reading selections to be exposed to the pupils (2) Reading Teaching Approaches which includes the approaches to be used by the teachers or even the parents in teaching reading to the pupils. (3) Teaching Materials which includes the teaching reading materials to be prepared by the teacher in using the reading program (4) Assessment which includes the objectives and the non-objective tests to measure the progress of the child in reading.

23. SCALE ON ATTITUDE TOWARDS MATHEMATICS (SATM)
IVEE GUCE, Joy Talens
College of Education, Arts and Sciences, De La Salle Lipa, Lipa City, Philippines
iveeguce@yahoo.com, jydlpn@yahoo.com
Filipino students commonly see mathematics as a difficult subject in school. Results of national achievement tests for several years support these findings that Filipino students are poor in mathematics. As social beings with personal beliefs, emotions and views, students’ attitudes should be considered in the learning process. Their motivation to learn plays an important role for them to achieve. To verify this scenario, an instrument scale on attitudes toward mathematics among Filipinos has been developed. Although numerous of them abound, not even one of the existing instruments emphasized the four factors such as liking and disliking mathematics, tendency to engage in or avoid mathematics activities, belief that one is good or bad in mathematics and belief that mathematics is useful or useless. This study is on the development of a new instrument suited for Filipinos to measure students’ attitude towards mathematics and to determine the underlying dimensions of the instrument by examining the responses of 249 students. The Scale on Attitudes Toward Mathematics among Filipino college students can be recommended for use in the investigation of students’ attitudes towards mathematics. With the development of this scale, teachers and researchers will realize that success or failure in math performance is greatly determined by personal beliefs.

Gonzaga University and Spokane Public Schools
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of model, cover, copy, compare (MCCC), token system, and match to sample for teaching basic functional life skills with a middle age single student with disabilities. MCCC is a student-managed strategy that teaches discrete skills through errorless correction. Match to sample is another strategy that teaches how to identify and discriminate based on a visual representation of the identical information. The effectiveness of MCCC and match to sample was evaluated using a multiple baseline design. The results indicated that MCCC and match to sample was effective in teaching a single middle age school student with disabilities his name, phone number, home address, and emergency contact name and phone number. Maintenance of the basic functional life skills was also found; except for the emergency contact name. However, even if maintenance was not conducted on the final set, emergency phone number was maintained; this is attributed to the length of teaching sessions on the final set. The MCCC and match to sample interventions were both easy to implement and employ in the special education middle school classroom.

mtshykhi@yahoo.com
The paper aims to explore how happiness, leisure and tourism play role in modern life, and how they are related to household budget. While in the past household budget was totally allotted to the necessities of food, clothing and shelter, nowadays, some portion of the household budget needs to be allotted to leisure and tourism activities leading to happiness. While in the West it is done so, in the developing countries, there is still a long way to go, to achieve that goal. However, tourism has become a popular global happiness and leisure activity. As reported, in 2011, there were over 983 million international tourist arrivals worldwide (UNTWO, 2012).
Tourism as a way to happiness is important and vital in some cases. It brings large amount of income in payment for goods and services available. The present paper partly investigates happiness, leisure and tourism in Tehran, Iran through assessing household budget. In that, 623 households were empirically studied to find out happiness, leisure and tourism vs household budget in Iran.

This study aimed at developing and validating survey instrument on academic institutions’ readiness to support community mangrove rehabilitation which can be used to determine the readiness of the academic institutions to support community mangrove rehabilitation programs which is valid and reliable. Likewise, there is no such instrument developed yet to assess the readiness of various academic institutions to involve in mangrove rehabilitation considering that effort toward restoring lost mangroves in the Philippines has been commendably immense. This study followed four steps in establishing the validity and reliability of the instrument such as defining constructs and content domain ; generating and judging measurement items ; designing and conducting studies to develop scale ; and, finalizing the scale. The data of the research were gathered in 2011 – 2012 and 2012 – 2013 academic years and were analyzed through confirmatory factor analysis. If this instrument will be utilized, it is expected that before administrators, faculty members and students engage themselves in this activity their readiness level will first be determined. Thus, intervention or orientation will be dome first to ensure proper management of mangrove forests. Programs concerning mangrove rehabilitation and management that involves participation of academic institutions can be formulated based on the results of the assessment using this instrument.

Maniwaya Island is one of the inhabited islands in the province of Marinduque. It is surrounded with white sand beaches and pristine waters good for boating, swimming, snorkeling and fishing, activities much like by tourists. The local governments of Sta. Cruz and that of Marinduque planned to boost the tourism in the province as source of revenues and income for its residents, thus one of these areas for tourism activities is the Island of Maniwaya. The island has 359 households, wherein 22 households from its five sitios were selected. This study aimed to identify the effects of tourism in the island’s sociocultural, economic and environmental aspects. The head of each household was considered as the respondents. The respondents were requested to rate what changes they have observed and experienced in the island. The benchmark criteria for each category were rated by the respondents starting from 1 to 5 e.g. very poor (1),poor (2), fair (3), good (4) and very good (5). Findings of the study revealed that with regard to sociocultural effects, the result of the survey obtained an over-all rating of 3.04 which is fair. And In terms of economic aspect, the result of the survey obtained an over-all rating of 2.88 which is also fair. Finally, with regard to environmental aspects, the result of the survey obtained an over-all rating of 2.26, which means poor. The fair ratings obtained in majority of the criteria is related to the fact that the industry in the island is still new or still young, which started only in 2009. Thus, majority of the households never felt yet the problems and benefits that it can bring to the community and to the environment as well.

mykramos1517@gmail.com
In the effort to communicate the gospel values in the context of the Filipino and in its native language is to bring out an authentic inculturation, it ensures not only the relevancy of the gospel but also the clarity of the message to the receptor culture. By articulating theology, Filipinos will able to form consciousness, thought, and understanding of their faith in their own cultural way. The more we can communicate and express our faith through our native language, the more that our feeling becomes intensified, deepened, and sharpened. And because of deepened feeling and willing, Filipino Christians can actualize what their Christian faith requires them to do. Hence, the objective to make theology more understandable to Filipino Christians, teaching theology using the dynamic equivalence of Theological and doctrinal terms in Filipino language in the classroom setting can be an important tool in learning where individuals can encounter and enhance further their understanding of their faith. This will give Catholic students to communicate, express, think, and discuss their faith in their own native language so as to live the faith they professed and to live by it in their own cultural way.

One of the most difficult problems faced by teachers in the elementary level is how to stimulate the interest of pupils in mathematics in order for them to perform better in this subject. The poor performance of pupils in mathematics led the researcher to determine the mediating effects of personal attributes and perceived usefulness of mathematics on the relationship of teachers’ classroom management styles, parental academic involvement and mathematics performance. Self-constructed questionnaires were used among 528 randomly selected grade six pupils in Central Luzon. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) was used through Analysis of Moment Structure (AMOS) to generate the mathematics performance model. Results revealed that personal attributes have significant relationship with teachers’ classroom management styles but not significant with parental academic involvement. Self-concept, math anxiety, usefulness of mathematics, gender, and educational attainment of parents are significant predictors of mathematics performance. Personal attributes and perceived usefulness of mathematics mediates significantly to classroom teachers’ classroom management styles and mathematics performance. They also mediate the relationship between parental academic involvement and mathematics performance. In the light of these findings, recommendations to teaching, learning, and research were discussed.

41. Knowledge and Attitude toward Lymphatic Filariasis (LF) and Compliance to Mass Drug Administration (MDA) among Households in Two Rural Barangays
Ryan Michael F. Oducado
West Visayas State University, La Paz, Iloilo City, Philippines
The Department of Health’s National Filariasis Elimination Program (NFEP) objective to decrease prevalence rate of lymphatic filariasis (LF) among endemic provinces in the Philippines to less than 1 per 1000 population primarily depends on the annual mass drug administration (MDA) of diethylcarbamazine (DEC) and albendazole for a period five years.
In view of scaling up compliance, this descriptive relational study was conducted to determine the knowledge and attitude toward LF and compliance to MDA among households in two rural barangays in Libacao, Aklan. The respondents of this study were taken using a stratified, systematic random sampling technique that included the 187 eligible household heads who received the two-drug combination during the second treatment round (TR) in 2011.
The results of this study revealed that most respondents were “highly” knowledgeable about LF and their major sources of information about LF and MDA were the barangay health workers (BHWs) and other interpersonal means, while the knowledge level of the respondents was found to be “high”. A little over half of the household heads exhibited “favorable” attitude toward LF. Among those who were covered, only two thirds of the respondents who received the tablets had complied with MDA and the percentage was below the 85 percent national standard. The most common reasons for noncompliance were forgetfulness and fear of the side effects of drugs. Moreover, there were also a few who experienced side effects to MDA tablets but these were mild and manageable.
There was a significant relationship between poverty status and knowledge about LF. Employment status was also significantly related to attitude toward LF’s disease process and its management. Age, sex, civil status, educational attainment, employment status, poverty status, knowledge about LF and attitude toward the disease were not significantly associated with MDA compliance. Furthermore, no significant relationship was found between the respondents’ knowledge about LF and their attitude toward it.
Finding further revealed that there was a significant difference in the knowledge about LF between the respondents in the two selected barangays. No significant difference was found in their attitude toward LF. Moreover, while there were more respondents who complied with MDA in barangay Rosal, no statistical significant difference was found in the household heads’ compliance to MDA.

West Visayas State University, La Paz, Iloilo City, Philippines
Many efforts have been made to define an array of factors related to what determines students’ board exam performance, but few studies were conducted in the Philippines as to what can predict academic performance of nursing students. This descriptive correlation study was an attempt to increase understanding of the academic and non-academic attributes of academic performance in professional nursing courses. Correlations among overall performance in professional nursing courses and sex, monthly income, type of high school attended, residence, High school GPA, NAT ratings, grades in English content courses, Math content courses, Science content courses were computed for the 60 students of Batch 2013 of Saint Gabriel College with complete records from the school registrar. The secondary data obtained were statistically analyzed with the use of the weighted mean, Chi square, Pearson r and regression analysis. Type of school attended, and all academic factors were correlated with academic performance in professional nursing courses. Multiple linear regression analysis revealed performance in English and Science courses as predictors of respondents’ academic performance in professional nursing courses. This study concluded that academic factors are better predictors of academic performance in professional nursing courses. The challenge for the colleges and schools is to develop strategies aimed at addressing these factors that are appropriate to specific contexts and student cohorts.

This descriptive-correlation study; conducted from January to February2014; employed a one-shot survey design. The over-all health promoting behavior of older persons in Iloilo City was low. It appears that the frequency that they engage in health promoting lifestyles was inadequate to promote health. This may be due to the interplay of factors that may have affected the older persons’ knowledge about a healthy lifestyle and the consequences of unhealthy practices, and access and utilization of health services. The mean scores on the HPLP II subscales seem to imply that the older persons had healthy eating habits and good nutrition practices. However, there is a need to modify their lifestyles to improve self-awareness and spiritual growth, identify stressors and manage them appropriately, assume own health responsibilities, and communicate and have better interpersonal relationships with their families and friends. Moreover, they need to engage in regular physical exercise

De La Salle Lipa
Field trips can be considered as one of the three avenues through which science can be taught – through formal classroom teaching, practical work and field trips. An exposure trip at Bangkong Kahoy Valley Field Study Center was arranged for a class of BS Biology and BS Education students enrolled in Ecology Course. This approach purposefully transformed the usual exposure trip from being a casual site visit into a focused and productive learning experience. This transformation from exposure trip to a botanical expedition has exceeded the initial activity goals. Rather than a day off from learning, the time spent at the study center has been a meaningful opportunity to engage students in an active ecological research project while delivering valuable science content. Employing the descriptive survey design, the learning gains of the students were assessed and students were directed to do a guided reflection writing using the ORID Model of Focused Conversation. The learning gains and reflections of the students confirmed that students can collaboratively develop focused research questions, make meaning from a variety of sources, carry out a vegetation analysis and conduct surveys on socio-economic status, plant resource utilization and ecotourism assessment of the host community. As students prepared for their trip and synthesized their learning afterward, they were able to come up with very impressive and scientifically sound research outputs.

Philippine Normal University, Ayala Blvd, Manila, Philippines
The study was intended to facilitate learning chemistry through the integration of graphic organizers (GOs). This study specifically determined the attitude toward chemistry and achievement of two groups of students under study. The study indicated that there is a significant difference between attitude toward chemistry of students in the experimental group before and after the experiment. The result of students’ perception about GO, as teaching strategy and approach to teaching chemistry, indicated the rationale in this undertaking. All presentations used by the teacher in the class incorporating graphic organizers in identified formats such web diagram, flowchart-concept map, Venn diagram and pictorial graphics obtained a good and very good perception. Performance, on the other hand, indicated ultimate measure of GO’s effectiveness in facilitating learning. This analysis implied that the experimental group performed significantly better than their counterparts in the control group with adjusted means scores of 47.45 and 39.11, respectively. Facilitating learning chemistry can be made through integrating graphic organizers. GO-based presentation solicited and indicated positive attitude from the students. Hence, the use of graphic organizers effect changes in behavioural dimensions of learning content for the better. GOs as conditioners can make students perform well and may seem to improve their attitude toward learning. GO is apparently indicating success as critical index of learning. It is recommended that GO be used by teachers to improve attitude and achievement of students.

One of the salient features in the implementation of K to 12 curricula in the Philippines is the use of the Mother tongue or lingua franca of the area as the medium of instruction from kindergarten to Grade 3 which brought significant effects to the Mathematics classroom situation. Sorsogon province with fourteen municipalities and one city has several local languages that vary from district to municipalities.
This descriptive–comparative study using survey-questionnaire and unstructured interview was conducted to describe, illustrate and compare dialects in the Province of Sorsogon as Mother Tongue-Based (MTB) medium of instruction in grade school Mathematics. A stratified sampling technique was utilized in determining the representative area for each of the identified four language varieties existing in the province such as Masbate Sorsogon dialect, Bikol Sorsogon, Waray Sorsogon, and Miraya Sorsogon dialect.
Findings revealed that variations in the mathematical terms of Sorsogon dialects within and between the representative areas include lexical and orthographical variations as used by the respondent grades 1 and 2 teachers of the identified four dialects. On the other hand, syntactic variations are visible in the mathematical statements as translated by the respondents in their own dialect. The difficulty of translating technical terms in mathematics and insufficient MTB-based instructional materials are the top problems met by the grade school teachers. A translation dictionary was developed as ready reference that could be validated and be utilized by the grade school teachers in the sample area of the study.

Private higher education institutions (HEIs) have the unique characteristic of being an institution of higher learning and a business entity at the same time. As a business entity, enrollment is the lifeblood of all HEIs that supports all of its other functions. True of any business, attracting customer and retaining them are the most important aspects that determine its profitability. In the case of HEIs, this means convincing prospective students to enroll and upon entering the institution, retain them until graduation. For this reason, it is important to know what drives student’s decision to stay or leave the institution. By understanding the different factors affecting students’ attrition and retention decision, the university will be able to effectively make strategic adjustments leading to high retention rate among its clientele: the students. Using the marketing research method called Conjoint Analysis, a tool for identifying underlying preference of consumer and the trade-offs they make, the research determined the students’ decision making process related to retention and attrition. The research found that quality of education is the most important factor determining retention and attrition among students. Nevertheless, quality of faculty and increase in total fees significantly impacts students’ decision to stay or leave a university as well. Communicating and emphasizing the HEI’s excellent quality education at every level is the most important strategy that the institution can adopted.

65. To Choose without Sacrificing Happiness: A Marxist Reading of Jose P. Laurel’s concept of Freedom and Morality
ARISTOTLE P. BALBA, Aldin L. Gonzales
De La Salle Lipa, arisbalba@yahoo.com
Significantly, ideas about freedom are not limited to the Western thinkers’ arena. In the Philippines, Jose P. Laurel has his share in intellectual discussion about freedom. In Laurel’s concept of freedom, the exercise of rights is very crucial in determining what freedom is. Laurel’s concept of freedom deals on the socio-political aspect of freedom including its implications. In one of his speeches, he equated freedom with political independence.
This paper aims to examine and analyze the concept of freedom of one the Filipino historical figure who is regarded as Filipino philosopher, Jose P. Laurel. It is interesting to analyze how a man who is considered to be the president of what is called “puppet government” views freedom. It is significant to find out how a president whose actions are defined and dictated by the Japanese authorities thinks about freedom. In addition, this paper aims to show the relationship of Laurel’s concept of freedom and his concept of morality, having righteousness as the guiding principle to individual morality.
The aim of examining and analyzing Laurel’s concept of freedom will be done through Karl Marx’s concept of freedom and morality. It will consult the different ideas and views of Marx about freedom and morality manifested in his socio-political theories.

As a president of the Republic of the Philippines, Jose P. Laurel acted as a true president and primarily thought of what is best for the Philippines. It is a fact that the period of his presidency was something different but he tried his very best to balance things. He faced the pressures given by the Japanese while thinking of the rights of the Filipinos. These things were evident in his acts, speeches, messages, and statements.
This paper will present some of those decisions made by Laurel that had become significant to the Philippine-Japan relations. The decisions of Laurel were powerful during the time of his presidency. This paper will cover only the period, 1942-1945. This paper cannot cover all those significant acts and decisions done by Laurel thus the researcher will choose only those which are considered critical.
The compilation of speeches, messages and statements of Jose P. Laurel which was published by the Lyceum of the Philippines will be considered as the main reference. To further enhance the work, different books about Jose P. Laurel and other publications helpful to the study will be utilized.
The leadership characteristics of Laurel are evident in his decisions. He was always after balancing things and favoring both Japanese and Filipinos. He was a proponent of peace, an economic stabilizer and a defender of human rights.

Land use changes and prawn aquaculture ponds on both sides of the Sungai Kampung Dew river banks have threatened the community of synchronous firefly species (Pteroptyx tener) at Kampung Dew, Taiping, Perak. This in turn, has affected the ecotourism activities of firefly watching operated by the community association of Kampung Dew (KECAP) since 2010. Firefly conservation efforts at Kampung Dew have been initiated by the expert group of experienced researchers from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) through rehabilitation of the firefly habitat. The intervention programme involves replanting of the host trees of the mating fireflies, i.e. Berembang (Sonneratia cassiolaris)and teaching the local comunity to select ripe fruits, sorting the best seeds for germination in polybags containing the river sediments and caring for the growing seedlings until they reach one meter height. The villagers were also trained to transplant the Berembang seedling in cages along the eroded and degraded river banks. These community outreach activities by the UKM researchers were supported by various local stakeholders.Furthermore, to facilitate sustainable ecotourism here, the boatmen were trained to become good, well informed tour guides, fluent in the Malay language and a smattering of English. The result of regular trainings and several stakeholders’ consultations have succeeded in raising the awareness of the village community, empowering them to engage in small home-based enterprises such as operating food outlets and gift stalls at the jetty area. The increase in visitor arrivals has indirectly enhanced the income of the local community andpositively impacted the local socioeconomics.

There has been a great deal of debate surrounding lack of infrastructure in school but very little research has addressed the accessibility of library’s in schools. The current literature reveals that use of library’s influences student performance and libraries are a source of information for the students. They learn how to read independently and how to research information. Library’s supports school programs as well as the teaching and learning process. They serve students by providing materials to meet their various needs and encouraging reading. In urban arrears libraries are neglected, some libraries have as little as three books per student and these books are old and outdated. In absence of poverty, the quality of the school library is the best predictor of reading scores. This study investigates accessibility of school library in seven schools in Tshwane west district (D15). A quantitative research strategy to draw data was used. The findings reveal that even though we are in the 21st century, we still have students with limited access to a library, we still have schools with no libraries. Sadly many children in schools today have nearly no access to books, and no quiet and comfortable place to read.

69. Bridging Leadership Gaps, Barriers, and Miscommunications in Organization: The Synergistic Communication Perspective
Dr. Romeo M. Barrios
Chair, Development Communication Department
Adventist University of the Philippines
Our traditional concepts of human communication have never been challenged in the past decades. Up to this day, we continue to cherish our old, worn-out ideas taught by our traditional teachers, without analyzing their relevance or applicability to our times. The issue is that many professionals who are now managers and leaders of institutions still carry such obsolete concepts. Instead of becoming empowered, dynamic, and synergistic managers, they become ineffective leaders. This study calls for a perspective change and paradigm shift inspired by Stephen Covey’s bestseller, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, focusing on Habit #6 Synergize. Synergy, according to Covey, means that “the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.” And 1+1= 3 or more. Using a multi-disciplinary meta-analysis, survey, and a great deal of armchair research methods, the Synergistic Communication Theory was developed because it provided “building blocks” to a more dynamic and insightful perspectives of human communication.
The highest aim of the study is to re-tool managers and leaders with empowering and enduring principles of wholistic communication in organizations, i.e. anchored not only on scientific, empirical, and social philosophies, but on spiritual foundations, as well. RMB

After being hit by a devastating typhoon in late 1994, donations coming from international sources poured. The Sisters of Sion Australia, a church-based group in Real Quezon, did not only facilitate the reconstruction of destroyed houses in the affected areas but also maximized the extra money received through establishing a non-profit women’s organization. This study focused on KUMARE Inc., the NGO that emerged in response to the need of helping people become more responsible in protecting their families against climate change. Focus group discussions and key informant interviews were conducted to provide insight on how microfinance aided in empowering women and mitigating the effects of climate change in Northern Quezon. Results showed that aside from increasing the incomes of families, women became active partners in the development and implementation of environmental projects. Their participation had not only promoted environmental awareness among their families but also got the other sectors of the community involved in their cause, particularly the local government units that included them in disaster risk management. The findings are discussed in the light of gender development, social change and partnership.

vmalonsozana@dlsd.edu.ph
Education is always challenged to come up with creative innovations in delivering instructions in the classroom. Through American linguist George Kingsley Zipf’s “Principle of Least Effort” or also called “Zipf’s Law”, a new, simple and logical lesson presentation format is hereby introduced: the “PARABLES Approach”. An expert in communication and author Steven Kleinman traced the seemingly innate human tendency to communicate as efficiently as possible by compressing phrases into acronyms and words into abbreviated utterances (vocal sounds) and the word “PARABLE” is an acronym that will form a unique blueprint or design in presenting a lesson which will serve as an uncomplicated guide for teachers, educators, or classroom facilitators. This study endorses that in lesson presentations, the following aspects must be touched: Prayer, Aims, References, Activities, Biblical Teachings, Lesson Proper, Evaluation, and Synthesis, and taking the beginning letters of each, the word “parables” will be formed.

fitzgeraldfabelico@yahoo.com
This study investigates the effects of social interaction and ability grouping on students’ metacognitive experiences in stoichiometric problem solving. The social and educational dimensions of social interactions are particularly investigated in this paper. The educational dimension of social interaction includes ability grouping while the social dimensions include metacognitive functions and transactive structures.
Metacognitive functions include the generation of New Idea and the Assessments of strategy, results, and understanding. Transactive structures include self-disclosure, feedback request, and other monitoring responses. Students’ metacognitive experiences include feelings of liking, difficulty, confidence, satisfaction, and estimates of effort, time, and solution correctness.
This descriptive study employed both the quantitative and qualitative methods. The participants were the freshmen BS-Nursing students of a private sectarian university in Nueva Vizcaya. These participants were purposively selected based on their mental ability.
The results showed that students’ metacognitive functions vary across ability grouping and showed a weak degree of correlation. Students’ transactive structures also vary across ability grouping and showed a weak degree of correlation. Students’ metacognitive experiences like feelings of liking, difficulty, confidence, satisfaction, and estimates of effort, time, and solution correctness vary across ability grouping. Although metacognitive functions affect quantitatively students’ metacognitive experiences in solving stoichiometry problems, the effect does not vary across ability groups. Similarly, transactive structures affect quantitatively students’ metacognitive experiences in solving stoichiometry problems but the effect does not vary across ability groups. Conversely, other monitoring transactive structure influences students’ feeling of difficulty and estimate of effort in solving chemistry tasks across ability groups.

This study records the untold stories of everyday life by 18 surviving residents of Daraga, Albay during the Japanese occupation from December 12, 1941 to April 1945. Everyday life in this study pertains to shelter, food and food source, clothing, education, transportation, communication, work, courtship and marriage, celebrations and religious activities, relationship with fellow Filipinos, guerrillas and the Japanese colonizers, and personal or unforgettable experience/encounter with the Japanese.
The study used the descriptive-analytical method supplemented by oral history in the documentation of the personal accounts of informants regarding their everyday life during the Japanese occupation in Daraga, Albay. The interview technique was utilized to draw out the verbal testimonies of the informants.
The study not only contributes to historiography but also provides a new material to reawaken the students’ knowledge and interest in local history. The personal accounts of the locale’s elderly substantiated the national story of the Japanese occupation thereby making the past more relatable to the locale’s new generation. The Daragueños’ everyday life tells a story of survival, adaptive mechanisms and capability to co-exist in the fast paced, fear-dominated Japanese occupation. The residents’ resiliency enabled them to overcome the deprivations and difficulties; as war transpired in the background of the non-combatant Daragueños, they also fought their own war of survival. They fought courageously and succeeded to overcome the war; they survived the war and everyday life continued.

84. In between St. Augustine and Luther: Grace and justification
Michael M. Ramos

mykramos1517@gmail.com
The view presented in this study has emphasized grace as a cause of spiritual strength and justification of man. In understanding the deep meaning and nature of grace, this paper analyzes the formations given on the subject by two great minds, St. Augustine and Martin Luther. Because of the great influence of their work on the theology of grace and justification, this paper tried to seek the answer to the question whether man’s understanding and belief of prudence would mean nothing at all, that any good that he will perform on his behalf would do nothing for his own justification. Thus it raises question; what is the purpose of man’s freedom if his proprium is nothing and that divine prudence is the source of everything good? This led to the idea that grace is the primary energy source of man to make good, not by his own, but by divine prudence to obtain justification. Therefore, in this sense there is nothing good in man.

noeru.sensei@gmail.com
This study sought to accomplish the following objectives: review theories and existing models for designing a task-based language syllabus; design and validate a task-based language syllabus; and propose a model for designing a task-based language syllabus.
The social development theory of Vygotsky (1978, 1986; Lantolf, 2000) was reviewed to examine the role of language learning as a social practice. Selinker’s (1972) interlanguage theory was consulted to understand how and why L2 students express themselves in L1 language. Krashen’s (1981) second language acquisition theory was included to help explain the students’ second language acquisition inside the school or outside in the working place. Halliday’s (1985) functional and communicative views of language were also studied for the benefit of the proposed model.
Various TBLT syllabus models by leading proponents were reviewed and considered. The participants were subjected to a needs analysis. Then, the research was processed by designing the proposed model syllabus and the learning material that goes with it. In the end, the proposed model was presented as the final output of the research.
The study confirmed that a step-by-step and comprehensive procedure was necessary to develop a model for a task-based syllabus design. On the whole, the Manarpiis Model for Designing a Task-based Language Syllabus stands on solid theoretical foundations of communicative teaching that could answer the language learning needs of second language speakers. The overall rating of Excellent thereby shows the proposed syllabus fit as an acceptable model.

This study sought to explore the intentionality to work abroad as a Nurse, and investigate its network of influences among selected fourth year nursing students enrolled at De La Salle Health Sciences Institute in Dasmariñas, Cavite. It also attempted to reconstruct the concept of nationalism through eidetic assessment of the object and background of the participants’ intentionality to work abroad. The phenomenological approach in research was utilized in this study to yield a more valid picture of the character of the people and bring about multiple lenses in clarifying the context and continuum of intentionalities within the main characteristic of consciousness that it is always intentional and presupposes a background.
The participants recognize that their intentionality to work abroad occurs within a context or background. Importantly, it includes their understanding of the world, including that others can and do participate in their intentional activities. The interweaving complimentary responses and expectations of parents and clinical instructors, and the concerns of social science instructors, who appear to be slighted by the same context of society, are actively shared and decided upon by the participants. The awareness and anxieties identified from the participants’ interpretation and preparation for work role abroad are indicative of their active processing of appending meaning and decision making about their preferred future. The participants’ continuum of intentionality indicates strong commitment to their profession to serve humanity that is not bounded by nationality. The participants are actively constructing and transforming social realities into pragmatic intentionality as well as they learn concepts of nationalism which are integrated in their course curriculum, but these nationalist concepts underwent standoff and revision in terms of reinforcement or repulsion by a network of influences that embed pragmatic impressions to their correlate consciousness.
The collage of phenomenological approaches employed in the phases of this study demonstrated its potent as a tool and process of illuminating awareness of the participants lived experiences.

88. Ang Dalawang Anyo ng Subli: Laro at Panata
By: Michael M. Ramos

IVAN BRIAN L. INDUCTIVO and Francisco Y. Pacifico
Lyceum of the Philippines University, Cavite
With the rise of open culture, learning (education) and governance; accessibility of information (open access and big data) and resources; transnational linkages; and proliferation of social media, our society is at the threshold of a borderless world. The movement for global citizenship, as explicated by Martha Nussbaum in her article in1991 paves the avenue for opportunities, challenges, critiques and impacts to international and multicultural education. The struggle for reconciliation and potential universal values, identity and sense of belongingness are just some of the issues being addressed. Discourses in education and curriculum visions for global citizenship re-emerged and have also taken the mainstream. Early on, Guin (1996) expounded in his paper philosophical and educational critiques on education for global citizenship, while Gough (2011), of La Trobe University, Australia, sought curriculum consensus and visions. This re-emergence of fora for global citizenship themes is contextual with the era of openness and ubiquity of information our society is experiencing. This paper intended to explicate the philosophical roots and implications of global citizenship to values, identity and education.
